Lewis Brown Nunnally, age 89, of Ellijay GA passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the North GA Medical Center in Ellijay GA. Mr. Nunnally, son of A.H. and Pauline Brown Nunnally, was born on August 28, 1923, in Fulton County, GA, and grew up in Bartow County near Cartersville, GA before joining the U. S. Army in 1940.
Mr. Nunnally was a WW II veteran and member of the 1st Infantry, 16th Regiment landing on Omaha Beach in France during the “D” Day assaults. His service took him through many countries in Europe during the war, and he was awarded the EAMET Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart after being wounded in Germany in 1945.
Mr. Nunnally was a member of the Georgia State Patrol for over ten years, attaining rank of corporal, and serving in the Atlanta, Canton, Blue Ridge and Valdosta posts. He retired after 25 years as an engineer with L & N (CSX) Railroad. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, VFW, and was active for many years with the Ellijay Lions Club. He was both a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Nunnally enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was keenly interested in Georgia history as his grandfather’s uncle, Joseph Emerson Brown of Canton, was Georgia’s Civil War Governor, with his son, Joseph Mackey Brown, also serving as a Governor of Georgia.
Mr. Nunnally is survived by one son, Lewis Brown Nunnally Jr., and wife Maria; one grandson, Joseph Nunnally, all of Quezon City, Philippines; brothers-in-law Windol (Evelyn ) Duvall, Edward (Laura)Duvall, sister-in-law Myra (Bill) McVey; and a number of cousins who remained close to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.H and Pauline Brown Nunnally; his wife, Sarah Duvall Bunch Nunnally; and his wife, Alice Logan Nunnally, and their son Dale Nunnally.
Visitation of family and friends will be on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Ellijay GA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Rubin Smith and the Rev. Edmund Miller officiating.
Following the service, interment will be held with military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery located at 1080 Veterans Cemetery Rd. Canton GA 30114 at 2:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Nunnally to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at P.O. Box 779, Ellijay GA 30540.
